healthy future

Ortho Form - Elbows, Hips
Eye Form
Kin Report - What is it?
As stated in NGRs mission statement,

Our primary focus is on the following diseases, which have been
identified in Ridgebacks and for which testing is available:
Hip Dysplasia
Elbow Dysplasia
Hypothyroidism
Ocular Diseases
Cardiac Diseases
Mast Cell tumors
Hearing
We promote the genetic testing of all breeding stock, their siblings and
offspring with submission of test results for the above diseases to the
only open registry available in the US; The Institute of Genetic Disease
Control in Animals (GDC).

HIP/ELBOW DYSPLASIA
Age Test to Perform Comments

12-18 mos. X-ray hips/elbows (prelim) Submit to GDC
24+ mos. X-ray hips/elbows Submit to OFA

In many countries, hip and elbow x-rays can be certified at around 12-13
months. OFA requires that dogs be 24 months old for certification.

Average Cost for hip x-rays __________
Average Cost for elbow x-rays __________
(Clinics sometimes offer these tests for as little as $60-$70)

Fees GDC Certification:
No charge for affected entries.
$20 (US) for first unaffected Certification (valid for the life of the
dog).
$5 (US) for each additional site evaluation requested at the same time
as the first site.
$10 (US) for each additional site evaluation submitted separately.
$5 (US) for later unaffected Certification
$50 (US) Maximum Package can be requested by a breeder desiring
evaluation of three or more dogs in the same litter. The breeder will
arrange for the collection of the evaluation reports of the members of
the litter, mail them to the GDC in a single envelope. including an
application form for each dog. This is a one time fee and cannot be
extended to individuals of a litter that are submitted separately or at
different times.
With this special price there are no refunds for registering of affected
individuals.

If your dog is already listed in another registry, the following fees would apply

to registering these results with GDC (As of Jan 1, '01 GDC
will no longer honor elbow certification from OFA.):
$2 (US) for registering each normal report from another agreed registry
named ____________. For example, it would cost $4 to register normal OFA
hip and elbow reports with GDC. No charge for affected sites.

$2 (US) Fax report.

Diagram of elbow positions for x-rays submitted to GDC:

http://www.egroups.com/files/NextGenerationRidgebacks/IEWGviews.BMP

The graphic  is from a pamphlet put out by IEWG. The
file is titled 'IEWGviews' and is just below the text info for IEWG.
This new graphic is a smaller file and easier to see. These are
available for all to print, especially to provide info to our
veterinarians that may not be familiar with taking two views. GDC
requires Fig 2 , flexed lateral view (45*) and either Fig 3, neutral
lateral view (85-120*) or Fig. 4, cranio-caudal view (15* pronation). We
used Fig 2 and 3 for our recent submissions......fitting all 4 views on
one film (the same size as that used for hip x-rays).

Remember ...... GDC as of Jan 1 '01 will no longer honor OFA
certification of elbows because OFA evaluation is based on one view. We
have some grace time to get our OFA elbow certification submitted to the
GDC database, but not much. GDC will also accept the OFA consensus
report for dogs with affect hips and elbows. The report must have the
cause (e.g. UAP, FCP or joint laxity, shallow acetabulum) marked. As
with the certificates, simply make a copy of this report and attach to a
completed GDC ortho form (also found in our Files area).

GDC will honor the OFA consensus report of affected dogs for no charge;
simply make a copy and attach to completed ortho form. This courtesy has
been extended to RR due to our efforts to establish this open database.
It is very important to submit affected dogs as well as normal dogs! If
you received such a report for an affected dog but didn't save it, your
vet will most likely have a copy in your dog's file. I don't know if GDC
will do this for all breeds. I asked Dr. Poulos to accept these reports
for RR so owners wouldn't have to have dogs re x-rayed and incur more
expense to submit them to the database.

Fees OFA Certification:
$25 for hips and elbows submitted together. (higher if submitted
separately)
The same charge for affected entries.

Studies that can be participated in:

Longevity Study
http://www.egroups.com/files/NextGenerationRidgebacks/RRLongevity.JPG

If you haven't already submitted data, please do so, especially data on
dogs from the 70's and 80's.

RRCUS Health Survey
Instructions and forms for the Health Survey can be found on the RRCUS
website:

http://www.rrcus.org

and in the Files section of this forum:

http://www.egroups.com/files/NextGenerationRidgebacks/healthsurveyinstruc.txt

The function of the survey is not to establish familial links but to
determine what traits are occurring in the breed and at what rate. This
survey is instrumental in helping to identify health issues that need to
be studied.
